At the most basic level of hair care for black natural hair… our hair needs to be cleansed, hydrated and moisturized. Add in keeping your ends healthy with proper trims and properly protecting your hair with silk, your hair is in a great position to thrive!
As I am on my own healthy hair journey, and on a the road back to wholeness after experiencing extreme breakage… Silk has been a huge player!
Silk helps to maintain the natural moisture and balance of your hair, without stripping it. It’s smooth so there is less friction, frizz and breakage when you use silk products to protect your hair. On the other side, rayon and cotton can strip your hair of moisture leading to frizz, and can cause serious damage and breakage. . Nobody wants that for their hair. Unfortunately many products found at the local beauty supply store that say “silk” are in fact NOT 100% silk. Actually they have no silk or satin at all. Those $2 bonnets and pillow cases are made of polyester, or some other synthetic fiber that has no benefit for your hair.
So today I want to share my list of 100% silk products that EVERY BLACK GIRL NEEDS… whether you have a silk press, or you are rocking your natural curls. Let’t get into it!
1. 100% Silk Scarf
The most multi-used item in my arsenal. From taking it to hotels to wrap around the pillows, to using this as a barrier around my neck when I wear my wool coat during the winter, to everything in between…. this has helped me in so many ways to keep my hair from snagging and breaking off at the ends. Get you one!
2. 100% Silk Cap
Y’all THIS CAP is a GAME CHANGER for when I want to wrap my hair! I have a full YouTube video detailing how I use it.. You can watch it below.
I loved this cap so much I bought one for my husband. And I’m glad I did because the other “silk” wave cap he’d been using, said “100% polyester” on the inside label. Beware of the scam of some of these BSS. Listen whether using to wrap your hair, or wearing underneath a hat or a wig, or using while you’re setting your two strand twist out… your hair will thank you!
3. 100% Silk Scrunchies
The only “hair ties” I will ever use on my hair and my daughter’s hair… especially on my daughter when I want to do any sort of gathering of her curls! These really make a difference for snag free puffs, and help to maintain the moisture on our ends when I tuck them under the frictionless texture of the 100% silk. No more regular scrunchies for us. These are worth every penny!
4. 100% Silk Pillow Case
Most of already know how important it is to have a silk pillow case, especially if you’re a wild sleeper and your bonnet/scarf ends up on the other side of the room. So I’ll only share this as a reminder, and also caution you to ensure it is actually silk! Like I mentioned, I had my own awakening when I realized most of my “silk” items purchased from the BSS were really polyester, even though the packaging had “silk” written clear as day. on the front. Such a scam! Please, please, please don’t get got! Get you a 100% silk pillowcase. I got one for everyone in my house. No games over here!
5. 100% Satin Bonnet
A staple in the black community. So I won’t go into too much here. What I will do is sound alarm yet again to remind you to CHECK THE LABEL! Make sure that what you purchase is 100% silk/satin and not polyester or some other synthetic fiber. I purchased the mommy & me version… and my little one wears hers every night.
Bonus: Snag free black hair clips
These are the G.O.A.T. of hair clips for when I pincer my hair. They are small yet mighty, okay! I “train my hair” with these clips (video coming soon on how I train my hair). But snag-free is the point. I used to be a bobby-pin girlie. I still am with certain styles, but for overnight use, these black clips made such a difference. Here’s a video showing how I use them!
Okay, show of hands, how many of these items did you own? No but seriously! Let’s all commit, and make 2025 that year of doing what we know to be absolutely necessary to care for our hair!
