How to Create an Indoor Scavenger Hunt For your Kids

I recently created an indoor scavenger hunt for my kids and it was a hit!

We’re entering our 3rd year of homeschool, and have been screen free for a little over 3 months now. So, the kids are no strangers to mommy  creating some indoor fun for them. We actually enjoy being home and being together, and I am so grateful.

But this was a bit of a surprise for them, and they loved it. So much so they asked to do it again, immediately after. Take a look at the video of how it all went down here!

Fun, right? Not to mention, that this can be set up in so many different ways, that it can be appropriate for any age. So if you loved this and want to create this in your home for your kids, here’s how to do it.

1 Choose a theme

This doesn’t have to be formal, but I will say have a plan. Whether using wall decals, or hiding objects around the house… get a plan of action. This way you can let the kids know what they’ll be looking for. Even if you do riddles and clues, have a copy of them along with the answers to help guide the adventure. These educational wall decals were perfect for us, as they are easy to peel off the walls and are reusable. Totally recommend!

2. Keep the hiding/placement age appropriate, and tailored for your kids.

I know my kids. And with a 3.5 year age gap, I know that they may process things a bit differently. So I was intentional to keep the placement “easy -to-moderate”. My almost 3 yr old totally impressed me, so next time I’ll make it a little harder. But for the first go-around I’d say lighten up on the intensity as to not distract from the fun.

3 Print the guide and “laminate” it if you can

I was quick on my toes with this one. I don’t have a fancy laminating machine to do, and my printer was definitely on struggle mode with the ink. So I grabbed some crayons, and got to work. I think I did a decent job.

For the lamination,  I simply used some heavy duty packing tape and some plastic binder inserts. I don’t even have binders, so I’m not even sure why I have them, lol. But I knew where to find them in my storage, and they sure did come in handy. The kids loved having a colorful guide to follow. Pro tip… plastic ziplock bags work a well!

**A fun alternative would be to print your guide out in black and white (or greyscale) and have your kids color it, before starting the scavenger hunt.

4. Celebrate and HAVE FUN!!!!!!!

This was the best part. I followed the kiddos around the house and joined in on their excitement as they found the different planets! I made it a tad bit too easy, in my opinion. So next time I will make it more challenging for sure. But overall it was such a fun way to play.

Would you try this? What fun things are you doing at home with your kids this fall?

xx
