Let’s Build | Dump the Frump Style Series Week 4

If you’ve been following the series this month then you know we’ve done a lot over the past few weeks! As we get into our final video for the series, I want to remind you… it doesn’t have to be difficult to look and feel amazing in what you wear in the body you have now, while you work towards the body you want.

When you get clear about how you want to look and feel, and take the steps to purge what doesn’t belong, you’ll have made room to build and add items in that align with the vision you have for yourself.

And we build with two main ingredients…. basics items and coordinating pieces!

How I’m working the process in the moment!

My wardrobe word for the year is “effortless”, and anything that doesn’t align with this vision for my wardrobe doesn’t belong. PERIOD.

Check out this quick video GRWM: from in the house to running errands. Here I’m sharing how I build one of my fave looks using basic items and coordinating pieces!

First I want to say… your girl isn’t playing about keeping this simple in this postpartum season. That all black situation in the beginning of the video… I own 5 of them! 5 pairs of stretch pants, and 5 camis with the shelf bra. With

And at any giving time during the week you’ll find me in this exact look! I call these my “basic pieces”. I own the same look in grey, brown and navy blue.

I love my basics because they are flattering, make me feel amazing, and are practical for my SAHM lifestyle. I’m still nursing so easy access to feed my little guy is a must. I also have an active toddler so wearing comfortable and chic clothing in which I am able to move is nonnegotiable!

Now, when it comes to school pickup/drop off, running errands, and even meeting up with my people, I have a beautiful assortment of coordinating pieces that help me to elevate my look EFFORTLESSLY!  From Dusters, Jackets, furs, down to my sneakers and boots… all of my coordinating pieces keep me snatched, while giving me the functionality that I need as a mom.

I keep the 3 Ps in mind when I think of how to add pieces into my wardrobe: Placement, Pockets, and Patterns!

Placement: Placement is everything, and will determine whether you look or feel frumpy or not. High waisted vs low rise. Fitted vs oversized.  Everybody is different so you have to decide what works best for you. For me, I ensure that when layering my items during this fall/winter season, they flatter my body. I don’t want anything that makes me feel bulky or frumpy in my wardrobe. When it comes to “The placement” of the items you’re adding into your wardrobe ask yourself, “will these items flatter my body”?

Patterns, Prints, Pops of Color: As I mentioned my basic items are nuetral colors (black, grey, brown..etc), so the majority of my coordinating pieces have prints and patterns that make my look POP! Mixing patterns in to go with your basics in black, brown…etc will take your look to the next level. So as you’re building don’t be afraid to use pattern, prints and pops of color to bring your look to life!

Pockets: We all get hyped about dresses that have pockets, but I am in a season of my life where I need pockets on everything! On of the things I LOVE about my stretchy pants (that carried me through my entire pregnancy), is that they have POCKETS! As a mom pockets are a must. My pants have pockets, my jackets have functional pockets! Pockets are an essential part of  #momlife!

Okay, so now it’s time for you to get to work. Like I mentioned in the video, identify your basic items and coordinating pieces and the build your looks! If you loved the looks I’ve shown, check out my Postpartum Fashion Faves here!

I would love to hear from your and feature you, right here on my blog!  All your have to do is let me know how you’ve “Dumped the Frump”, and send a photo of yourself in a look you were able to create while using the steps in this month series! All entries can be sent to ceo@millennialmomchat.com by 12pm on Monday 2/27/23.

What Lies Beneath | Dump the Frump Style Series Week 3

It’s week 3 of our “Dump The Frump” mommy style series, and I’ve been having a really great time revisiting these wardrobe and style  tips to help me feel and look amazing!

This week is all about “What Lies Beneath”.  Let’s dive right in!

Check out this other amazing video on the topic!

What Lies Beneath : 3 Things Every woman needs in her arsenal!

How I’m working the process in the moment!

I’m about 11 weeks postpartum, and right now breastfeeding is a huge part of my life. In keeping with my “wardrobe word” for the year, I want to feel effortless, and that includes my undergarments! So I was able to get a visual, of how I wanted to feel (week I), and purge to make sure that I only held on to undergarments that fit properly (that included nursing bras to include for easy access). It was such a cathartic process, and now when I get dressed I’m starting with undergarments that not only fit well, but are practical for this season of my life. And I like the way they look! Ain’t nothing wrong with pretty bras, panties, and other important undergarments!

When was the last time you gave your undergarments a performance review? Have you given yourself permission to wear things that make you feel amazing, even while you’re working on the body you want? Or are you settling for  ill-fitted undergarments, because “no-one will see them”? Let’s change this!

Often times it’s working on what people cannot see, that causes us to feel our best!

So ask yourself “What lies beneath”?

Time for a Wardrobe Purge | Dump the Frump Style Series Week 2

Let the PURGE begin!

As you go through your wardrobe, set aside time to be intentional about it.  Use your “wardrobe word” to guide you, and be realistic. If you’re like me and you’re being intentional about working on your body, it’s okay to set aside the items that you plan to revisit at a specified time in the future for a “wardrobe audit” (for me that’s 6 months).

Again be realistic. If you know you’re goal is a size 8 and you’re  still holding onto clothes in a size 4… you know what you need to do!

If there is anything that doesn’t fit, makes your feel uncomfortable, and just not like the best version of yourself, toss it. Life is too short, and way too busy to settle for uncomfortable frumpy clothes.

LET IT GO!

We’re on a mission to look and feel amazing in the clothes that we wear while we work toward the body we want! And believe me, that will only happen if you get intentional and let go of what no longer serves you!

How I’m working the process in the moment!

Last night hubby and I had date night and I loved the outfit I was able to pull together. I already owned everything… and it felt amazing to go into my closet and pull from the things that I not only love… but they FIT RIGHT NOW!

As much as I would have loved to wear my fave pair of  distressed denim, they don’t fit right now… so I had to put all of them aside for the next 6 months, and focus on the here and now.

So first I removed every single pair of jeans that didn’t fit my 10 week postpartum body and put them in a vacuum sealed bag (labeled 6 month wardrobe audit). Then of what bottoms I had left, I had to decide  what to purge and what to keep.  I only kept bottoms that fit now, felt good and they had to be “effortless”… meaning no struggle to get them on or off!

So here I am, wearing a pair of jeggings that

🙌🏾 Fit me now

🙌🏾 Feel great on my body

🙌🏾 And effortlessly flow with my current wardrobe

And I felt wonderful!

These will be a repeat item for sure, while I work my way back into my pre-prego wardrobe. But the key takeaway is to literally get rid of anything that no longer serves you in this season. It’s time to PURGE!

Comment below, what did you purge?

How to Feel Amazing in What you Wear (After Having Kids)

How to feel amazing in what you wear in the body you have now  while you work towards the body that you want… postpartum mommy style!

The other day I was preparing to nurse my newborn (in case you missed it,,, I had another baby) and while trying to undo my nursing bra, chi it was a Messss.

I didn’t feel comfortable!

My pants were digging into my stomach, my socks were twisted and wet after stepping on a piece of ice (😭), and my hair wasn’t done.  Struggling to detach my nursing bra, that was riding up my back, was just the straw that broke the camel’s back.

So I took off my damp sock, tried to adjust my nursing bra, and pulled my pants up so they didn’t dig into my “proof of pregnancy”.

But then I said to myself “Girl…YOU KNOW BETTER”?  Because the truth is I was simply putting a bandage on the real issues I was facing in that moment…

1. the nursing bra was great when I had Dream but just wasn’t a good fit now with this body after having Vision. This body is different, and that nursing bra needed to go!

2. my pants were one size too small and needed to be retired until I do my wardrobe audit. I need to remove all the clothes that don’t serve me, or this body, in this season!

3. when I looked in my closet, I got overwhelmed.  I’d built this gorgeous wardrobe of pieces that I LOVE, and although I am 100% confident that I’ll get back into at least 90%, at this current moment THEY DON’T FIT. And as beautiful as they are, they’re a distraction for me right now. I needed to get them out of sight while I work on me!

All in all, I needed to do what I KNOW and TEACH others to do… revisit my wardrobe to ensure that it only includes clothes that make me feel great. Nursing bras included.

So I went back to the basics!

While my son napped (Lawd, I have a son), I took a few moments to really get clear about how I wanted to feel,  and wrote out my “Wardrobe Word” for the season… “effortless”. I cannot and will not put anything on my body that feels like work, or makes me feel uncomfortable.

Since I’m giving myself 6 months to get back into some of my fave items, I put all of those clothes that will be a part of that “wardrobe audit” in a vacuum sealed bag until then. That way I’m only focused on sorting through what fits now and purging accordingly. Things that don’t make me feel good or don’t inspire me… to the Goodwill they go!

Lastly, I started to build my postpartum looks! I tried on a few outfits, pairing the basic items I kept with my other coordinating pieces! I did this to determine my “go to” looks for the different events in my life at the moment; around the house, school pickup/drop off, doctors visits, church and going out with hubby/girlfriends.

Once I got clear on how I wanted to feel, purged what didn’t align, and then got a clear image of what looks I wanted to create during this postpartum period… I was able to build a small inspiring collection of looks to carry me thorough the next few months.

Y’all!  What a difference it has made.

Listen life is TOO SHORT to be uncomfortable and bothered in what we put on, even while working on our bodies in the postpartum period. You don’t have to be or feel frumpy just because you’re a mom!!

We can totally slay and feel amazing in the body we have now, while we work towards the body that we want. I know I am!!!
